He also was a 1st VP and 2nd VP and District Governor, South East. He had a keen interest in forestry and held the position of Forestry Committee Chair for many years and was the N.B.W.F. Director on the Canadian Forestry Association of N.B. At the 1974 N.B.W.F. The « Tony Langen Forestry Award » continues to be awarded annually nearly fifty years later.

Tony was also the N.B.W.F. representative on the Restigouche River Zone Management Committee.

Tony’s efforts were recognized by his peers and he was the recipient of the N.B.W.F. 1985 « Sportsman of the Year Award » and the 1988 N.B.W.F. « Appreciation Award ». In 1980, he was named as a N.B.W.F. He was an Air Traffic controller with the call sign “Whisky Mike” and served on their national union. As a controller, he had time off to enjoy his love of the outdoors. After his retirement he went to China and Antigua to teach students of air traffic control. But retirement also gave him the opportunity to have his log house overlooking his beloved Miramichi in Doaktown where he lived for over 25 years.

Wes was a quintessential outdoors man, enjoying hunting, fishing, canoeing and guiding sports and friends on the Miramichi and its many tributaries. He hunted moose, deer, partridge, and in his younger years, waterfowl. His especially loved partridge hunting with his yellow Lab Cammy. It said that he knew every apple tree and thornbush in Albert County.

However, his greatest joy was salmon fishing, especially on the North Renous and the Rock Ponds. He and Bill Carter explored much of the North Renous, finding out of the way pools that few knew of, fishing behind rocks that looked “grilsey” and using the then newly tied Carter Bug. He was a quiet angler and would often notice a rise and just walk out to cast for it. On one occasion he did this, hooked a grilse and handed his rod to a nearby lad to play. He also enjoyed trout fishing, from his secret spring hole on the Little Southwest to the sea trout run at Quarryville and fishing No Name Brooks with his friend biologist Bill Hooper.

He truly believed that fishing had nothing to do with catching fish. He would often return home with tales of boils, rolls, swirls and fish that would come up to look, but not to take. He loved to just sit by the river watching the water go by and seeing fish go by.

In his younger years he and Dan Fowler had Walker coon hounds, and they spent many days travelling the back roads looking for cat tracks. He was however interested in all aspects of the outdoors, from finding a Cardinals nest uphill behind his house, watching the return of Rose-breasted Grosbeaks in the spring, looking for coyotes in the fields along the Petitcodiac River and going down country to see farmed elk in the moonlight.

Wes liked kids, and again with Dan Fowler and under the auspices of Moncton Fish and Game, organized annual youth camps teaching outdoors activities to them.

Wes was one of the early persons to serve on the Wildlife Trust Fund and as its chair. He was president of the Atlantic Salmon Museum at Doaktown. Wes was also president of the New Brunswick Sports Fish Advisory Board which guided the federal and provincial departments on their Memorandum of Understanding for the management of sports fish in NB and funding of the recreational fish program.

All his dedication to conservation and the out of doors was recognized in 1999 with the prestigious Roderick Haig Brown Award for his outstanding contribution to conservation and the enhancement of recreational fishing in Canada.

He is remembered as an exceptional Conservationist, angler and hunter.

Our last partridge hunt in Doaktown, there was an old homestead back in on the Dungarvon with you guessed it… three apple trees.
