Sunday Hunting (March 14, 2008)
The following is a copy of the Press Release issued by DNR on Friday, March 14th, 2008. Although this is not exactly as the NBWF requested it is certainly a start and better than what we had in the past.
Hopefully New Brunswick hunters will act responsibly here and the general public will see that it is no big thing and perhaps it will lead to year-round Sunday hunting. All of you who worked hard to make this happen should be proud of your efforts.
Beginning this fall, Sunday hunting will be permitted in New Brunswick during three weeks of the deer hunting season.
Natural Resource Minister Donald Arseneault announced on Friday the province’s Fish and Wildlife Act will be amended to allow the weekend hunt between October 28 and November 17.
“I am pleased to introduce this amendment that will better reflect the current attitudes towards activities on Sunday and to lessen the restriction on hunters,” Arseneault said in the legislature. “At the same time, we are balancing the needs of the non-hunting public by limiting the number of weekends.”
Bear, small game, grouse and migratory birds can also be hunted during the same period.
The change shouldn’t affect wildlife management, conservation or sustainability in the province, said the Minister.
New Brunswick will be the 10th jurisdiction in Canada to allow Sunday hunting.
